Men on Fire Encounter Retreat (Level 1) Talk 5

A Culture of Glorious Freedom

Slide 1 Man on Fire

Man burning in hell. The wrong kind of man on fire.

Slide 2 Men on Fire

Our logo. The right kind of man on fire…on fire with the Holy Spirit. Men on Fire is a series of retreats that seek to draw men into a deeper revelation of the role of the Holy Spirit in in the maturing of the saints, so that we can grow into our identity as sons of God.

Romans 8-14 - For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Slide 3 SaintMaker Ministries

SaintMaker Ministries is the outreach effort of City of the Lord, a Catholic, Charismatic, Covenant Community. The Holy Spirit is the Sanctifier, the SaintMaker. All City of the Lord outreach ministries are receptive to the Person of the HolySpirit and seek to invite believers into a deeper relationship with Him.

Slide 4 A Culture of Freedom

John 8:32 – You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.

Bishop Thomas Olmsted: Evangelizing through Catholic SchoolsTrue freedom is freedom for excellence; hence, freedom increases when something becomes more fully the thing it was created to be. A joyful and evangelized person is truly free to be and live as a child of God.

Slide 5 They May Take Our Lives, But They’ll Never Take Our Freedom

Romans 8: 14-21 - For all who are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified with Him.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from its bondage to decay and will obtain the glorious freedom of the sons of God.

Slide 6 Led According to the Flesh

The mind led by the flesh is enslaved. In the Greek, to be led according to the flesh, the impression is to walk after things that are attractive to us. It’s like a boy following after a shiny red balloon. Each of us follows after the things that attract us. Some are good. Some are bad. Some are very bad.

Slide 7 The Flesh is Death

Romans 8:5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. 9 If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die

Slide 8 Led According to the Spirit

The Mind led by the Spirit is life and peace. In the Greek, to be led according to the Spirit, the impression is to lead an ordered life, even a regulated life. It is like a horse who has been trained to do a certain job. He submits to the bridle and allows his trainer to instruct him and lead him.

Slide 9 Do You Love Me?

John 21:18 - Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go."

Slide 10 The Spirit is Life

Romans 8:5 Those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 9 You are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. 10 If Christ is in you, the Spirit gives life. 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Slide 11 - The Splendor of Truth

In The Splendor of Truth, Saint John Paul teaches that there is no true conflict between human freedom and God's law. The true end of human freedom is growth as a mature son into the person each is created by God to be. Furthermore, God's divine law governing human behavior is not opposed to human freedom, but rather it protects and promotes that freedom.

Slide 12 Freedom from or Freedom to

Freedom from sin, slavery, darkness and fear.

Freedom to serve, love, hope and belong.

Slide 13 …lest we boast in ourselves…

From a homily given October 11, 2016 - Jesus urges us to pray without being seen, without being show-offs. Our Lord instead shows us the path of humility. What is important is the freedom given to us by redemption. That inner freedom, that freedom to do good deeds in secret without blowing our trumpets, is Jesus’ path: humility and humiliation. Jesus humiliates himself, empties himself. This is the only way to remove egoism, cupidity (greed for money or possessions), arrogance, vanity and worldliness from ourselves.

Slide 14 A Dwelling Place for a Dwelling God

God had Moses make the Tabernacle so that He could dwell in the midst of His people. Later, Solomon built the Temple in Jerusalem for the same purpose – so that He could dwell with His people. All of this was a lead up to the Incarnation. God became man in the Person of Jesus Christ so that He could dwell with His People. Finally, God came to His ultimate purpose in the bestowing of the Holy Spirit. Now, God indwells man. He doesn’t only dwell with His people. He dwells in His people.

Slide 15 Hosting the Presence of God

Saint Mother Theresa and Smith Wigglesworth were both well known for hosting the Presence of God to the degree that others around them could feel and experience God’s presence.

Slide 16 from Bishop Olmsted

I hope that each man reading this Exhortation will experience the blessing of good friendships like the ones between the saints. I cannot imagine what my own life would be like without the good friends God has given me.

I hope, too, that you will take what is helpful in my message, bring it to the Lord in prayer, and go forward confidently in your vocation as men. Our life in Christ is not one of “do’s and don’ts,” but an adventure in authentic freedom. Embrace that freedom in order to place your life at the service of Christ, beginning in your home and radiating into the world.

We need to get off the sidelines and stand up for life on the front lines. We need faith like that of our fathers who defended the children of previous generations and who gave up their own lives rather than abandon their faith in Christ. My sons and brothers, men of the Diocese of Phoenix, we need you to step into the breach!

Slide 17 I Am Burdened with Glorious Purpose

The glorious purpose of the sons of God is to bring all of creation into His glorious freedom.

Slide 18 Be Who God Meant You to Be

St. Catherine of Sienna - Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on FIRE!
